As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming Green Horizons Congress that is scheduled to take place on 9 and 10 October at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, I am filled with a sense of excitement and purpose. This year’s event holds a special significance as AgriSA celebrates its 120th anniversary, a remarkable milestone that speaks to the resilience and dedication that have defined the agricultural sector for over a century.
The Green Horizons Congress promises to be more than just a gathering of industry leaders and stakeholders; it is a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainable agriculture, innovative strategies, and collaborative growth.
I am looking forward to engaging with the delegates from our provincial structures, our farmers, as well as industry leaders and role players from across the agricultural value chain.
On 10 October, the opening session at Makers Landing will set the scene for the rest of the day’s discussions. Addressing though-provoking themes, we will celebrate our shared heritage, acknowledge past achievements, and look forward to a future of continued growth and sustainability in agriculture.
We are privileged to include distinguished speakers in our programme such as renowned agricultural economist Prof. Nick Vink from Stellenbosch University on the historical development and role of institutions in South African agriculture, Sandra Kramer, EU ambassador to South Africa, who will share a global perspective of agriculture, and Prof. Ferdi Meyer from BFAP, who will discuss the future role of institutions in agriculture. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the investability of the food economy.
In the afternoon, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in parallel workshop sessions focusing on key topics such as data and technology in agricultural innovation, ESG and sustainability in the agricultural value chain, and sustainable food systems.
As a highlight of the event, the Green Horizons Congress will conclude with a ‘Feast of abundance’ at Makers Landing on the evening of 10 October, where we’ll celebrate the resilience of the agricultural sector as well as the diverse products that are the fruits of the industry’s labour.
