Earlier this month, the AgriSA team and I had the privilege of attending NAMPO 2024 – an event that continues to demonstrate its immense value to the agricultural community in South Africa.
Recognised as the largest agricultural show in the Southern Hemisphere, NAMPO is not just an event; it is a cornerstone of the agricultural calendar and it serves as a critical platform for networking, providing unparalleled opportunities for stakeholders across the agricultural spectrum.
The significance of such shows cannot be overstated, especially in an industry where staying up to date with the latest advancements is crucial. Agricultural trade shows like NAMPO provide a stage for experts, companies, and organisations to showcase their products, services, and innovations.
This year’s show was particularly valuable in fostering connections and business opportunities. The in-person interactions and discussions enabled farmers, agribusinesses, suppliers, and manufacturers to explore potential collaborations and distribution channels, leading to valuable industry connections.
As in the past, exhibitors introduced new machinery and technologies to an engaged and targeted audience, offering hands-on experiences that highlight the unique features and benefits of their offerings. This direct engagement is something that cannot be replicated through phone calls or emails, making the event a critical moment for many businesses.
For me, cementing old and new partnerships was a highlight of this year’s show. The event succeeded in fostering an environment where participants could meet potential partners, suppliers, and service providers. These interactions often lead to joint ventures and collaborative projects that advance the agricultural sector. The ability to engage with others in the industry, share ideas, and build relationships is crucial for driving collective progress and sustainable development.
But beyond these benefits, NAMPO offers a unique opportunity for the general public to engage with the agricultural sector. It provides insight into how food is produced and the steps the industry is taking towards sustainability. Furthermore, it serves as an educational platform for the public, helping to inform them about the importance of agriculture and its role in food security.
Building on the momentum from NAMPO, I am excited to announce the Green Horizons 2024 agricultural congress, scheduled for 9 and 10 October 2024 at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The theme, “Green horizons,” underscores our commitment to sustainable agriculture and forward-looking strategies to tackle future challenges.
The congress, presented by AgriSA, will kick off with our annual general meeting, followed by a welcoming cocktail function at the Zeits Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (ZeitsMOCAA) for affiliated members. The main event on 10 October will feature five thought-provoking discussion topics, each hosted at carefully selected venues within the V&A Waterfront. These sessions will delve into the challenges and opportunities shaping the South African agricultural landscape, promoting sustainability and prosperity.
In addition to the discussions, the congress will provide ample networking opportunities, allowing attendees to connect and collaborate. The event will culminate in a gala dinner, celebrating AgriSA’s 120-year journey and paying tribute to other centenary companies. This celebration is a testament to the resilience, innovation, and dedication that define our sector. As we look forward to the Green Horizons 2024 agricultural congress, we invite all stakeholders to join us in this journey towards a sustainable and prosperous future for South African agriculture. Together, through events like NAMPO and Green Horizons, we can continue to sow the seeds of innovation and collaboration, reaping a harvest of collective knowledge and progress.
